ILLINOIS (WTVO) — Millions of federal dollars are being used to get more young people into jobs that use heavy machinery in Illinois.

The state received $80 million to support apprenticeship programs.

On Thursday, Rep. Nikki Budzinski (D-13th) joined a workforce development organization and a heavy machinery company to explain how the grant funding will be used at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.

Eric Hill, CEO of the Youth Workforce Development Foundation, said, “This grant model is really a model of bringing the industry together with education and having our students see access to what career opportunities exist and then connecting them to those career opportunities.”

The grant is part of more than $244 million to expand the registered apprenticeship system. Illinois also approved $18 million to support apprenticeships.
