ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — August 1st marks National Pollworker Recruitment Day, a day created to publicize the need for election judges.

Poll workers oversee elections, register voters, and more.

Winnebago County Clerk Lori Gummow said 500 are needed for the upcoming November election.

“We have fought very hard for our right to vote. And the election judges are the ones that are out there on the front line making sure that it’s run efficiently and effectively,” Gummow said.

She went on to say that her office is expecting a larger turnout than average this year, for the Presidential Election.

“We need enough Republican and Democratic judges so that you have a good balance at each polling location. Again, just with checks and balances to make sure that everything is being done appropriately,” Gummow said.

“We have training that’s going to be coming up. So this is why it’s a really important time to sign up to be an election judge so that we can get you in the cycle to make sure that you are trained before Election Day comes. So, don’t wait until the last minute to sign up. Sign up now!” she urged.

Sue Theden, the president of the League of Women Voters of Greater Rockford, became a poll worker two years ago.

She said, “It does make me feel really proud, to be involved in the process. And I see how the entire process is getting people out to even want to run for office, is super important. So and then having fair and efficient elections is critical.”

Gummow added, “It’s a very important role. They’re the ones that make sure that elections are run efficiently, effectively, and that anybody that is legally able to vote can cast their ballot.”

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and be registered voters in the county in which they reside.

Those interested in becoming an election judge can call the Winnebago County Election Office or visit their website .
