Gone are the days of Tony Ferguson being an elite UFC fighter.

Now, the former interim champion is a shell of his former self.

Ferguson, though, seems determined to not end his career on a loss. That is why he will return once again this Saturday at UFC on ABC vs. Michael Chiesa.

The last time Ferguson won a fight was in 2019 when he was on the cusp of competing for UFC gold. He stopped Donald Cerrone and improved to 25-3.

Since that time, he has lost seven consecutive. Included in that stretch is two knockout defeats and a pair of submission losses.

But even staring another loss in the face, Ferguson remains focused on the future.

“I feel comfortable,” he said to competing at welterweight (thanks to MMA Fighting for the quotes). “I don’t feel like this is going to be my last fight.

“I have to do some extraordinary shit. It’s what I’m planning to do.”

Ferguson added that “I love the UFC” and he wants to remain on the active roster regardless.

“I do want to be here,” he said. “I don’t want o fight for another promotion. I have to earn that right.”

Has Tony Ferguson Tarnished Is One Shiny Resume?

It is hard to remember the Ferguson who won the interim UFC title and scored 12 consecutive wins at one point of his career.

During that run, he was regarded as one of the best. Wins over Josh Thomson, Edson Barboza, Rafael dos Anjos and Anthony Pettis were included along with at title victory vs. Kevin Lee.

But we are so far removed from that version of this fighter. Does anyone even remember him?

The 40-year-old still believes he has something left in the tank. We will find out this weekend from Abu Dhabi.

“I have this game plan,” Ferguson said. “I’m going to outpoint you. I’m going to (expletive) work you. I’m going to make you want to get the (expletive) out of there.

“Chiesa is going to have his hands full. Respect, but the respect ends as soon as that cage door closes.
