When the New York Giants signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract extension in March 2022, lots of eyebrows were raised.

The fact that Jones fell flat in the first year of the new deal only made the critics louder, as the signal-caller dealt with multiple injuries before eventually bowing out to a torn ACL after six games. During his time on the field, Jones threw two touchdowns and six interceptions.

Not exactly $40 million per year numbers.

However, Giants owner John Mara doesn’t seem to have any regrets about the Jones extension.

“I’m still happy we gave him that contract, because I thought he played really well for us in ’22,” Mara said, via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan .

That much is true. Jones had a very impressive season in 2022, leading the Giants to a surprising playoff appearance and a Wild Card Round win over the Minnesota Vikings.

“Last year, he got hurt. Let’s be honest, when he was playing, we weren’t blocking anybody,” added Mara. So, let’s give him a chance with a better offensive line, with some weapons around him to see what he can do. … We made a decision to stay with Daniel and add a weapon for him, and I think that’s going to work out for us.”

Giants drafting Malik Nabers should significantly help Daniel Jones

As Mara specified, Jones hasn’t really had much help.

Since entering the NFL in 2019, he has never had a No. 1 receiver. His best option has been Darius Slayton, who has never even achieved 800 yards in a single season.

New York decided to get Jones some assistance in the NFL Draft this past April, selecting LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick.

The Giants also addressed their offensive line issues in free agency, and while it’s still a work in progress, it should be better than it was in 2023.

Jones has never really had a legitimate set of weapons under center in New York, so it’s only fair to give him an opportunity with Nabers this coming season.

But here’s the catch: Daniel Jones’ contract is not guaranteed beyond 2024, so if he slips again this year, the Giants may end up cutting him loose.
