    ‘Harassing paying customers,’ rages Walmart shopper hassled 4 times & forced to show receipt – but others ‘waltz on by

    WALMART continues to come under fire from disgruntled customers who have repeatedly slammed the retailer’s receipt check policy.

    On Sunday, a Georgia woman complained that she had her receipt checked four times at Walmart while other people seemed to walk right by.

    “Usually I’m not averse to showing my receipt, but today was different. You watched me check out using self-service, you have cameras overhead, you spoke to me as I was checking out,” wrote the woman on Facebook .

    “For once, there were enough employees and very few customers.”

    “You offer me a choice for my receipt, so if I text it to myself and don’t have my phone, what will you do when I can’t produce one? So, I said no when you asked if you could see my receipt,” the post continued.

    “I know that shoplifting is a huge issue and you choose to not stop them, you just let them waltz on out the door. I paid and you try to stop me.”

    “You either trust me or you don’t,” the post concluded.

    “Take out self-service if you like, but don’t bother me until you decide to stop shoplifters. They’re eating your food and stealing your stuff but you harass your paying customers instead.”

    The U.S. Sun reached out to Walmart for comment.

    WALMART WOES

    While initially designed to prevent thieves from making off with unpaid goods, the process has drawn the ire of many shoppers who have complained the process doesn’t work.

    Many customers have ranted on various social media sites about how Walmart’s greeters only seem to check some shoppers rather than everyone.

    And the harassment by Walmart staff doesn’t seem to end with the store’s greeters.

    One X user claims that they left their cart , which totaled $350, due to a rude interaction with a manager.

    The interaction came to light when the retail giant tweeted : “If you could win a [gold medal] for a shopping event…what event would it be?”

    Walmart’s post was a playful nod to the Olympic games going on in Paris .

    While many of the responses were simple such as Halloween decorations or back-to-school shopping, one user took the time to berate the store.

    Camron Dowlatshahi, a Los Angeles attorney, spoke to The U.S. Sun about receipt checks and customer's rights and options when it came to being asked to show your receipt.

    1. There has been a lot of debate around the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it is within the store, it is completely legal. “There’s seemingly nothing illegal about that. You’re still on the company’s premises and their reason to do it is to prevent thefts,” Dowlatshahi confirms.
    2. However, if they are chasing you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location matters,” he explained. “If you’re outside of the store you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of theft and that you have to show your receipt, I think that’s a bit of a different situation because now you’re on your way.”
    3. While customers are allowed to say no to receipt checks, it may cause issues if you do and the store suspects you of stealing. “You can say no, maybe it creates an unnecessary hassle for yourself because now you may have the police come to your house and follow up,” said Dowlatshahi.
    4. If you are being barred from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you could have a legal case — but the store must have held you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus for doing so,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a customer has been emotionally traumatized by being held for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] to sue.”
    5. “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s just a really simple thing to do. If you didn’t steal anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

    According to the disgruntled customer, the interaction came when they noticed a discrepancy in an item’s price.

    The customer reportedly flagged down an employee who, instead of dealing with the issue, directed the customer to another register.

    “I’d settle on you just not putting lazy people to manage the self-checkout line,”  the customer seethed .

    “Pretty crappy experience this week when they wanted me to go to the other register so they didn’t have to enter the price correction.”

    Walmart quickly commented on the post and attempted to rectify the error.

    “Not the experience that we strive for. Could you send us a DM, so we can learn more about your visit,” they wrote .

    It is currently unclear if the person responded.
