Rain causes flash flooding and a Travel Advisory
We were starting around 4:00 p.m. Thursday, the atmospheric cap keeping things quiet mostly this afternoon broke. Because of that and our extremely muggy dew points, storms developed very quickly and were very slow-moving! This prompted multiple flash flood warnings to be issued across several counties. It also caused several road closures, like on I-465 and Fall Creek Road on Indy’s Northeast side.
Additionally, Hamilton County is under a Travel Advisory through 9:00 PM Thursday due to the rainfall. In the SE portions of the county, this is where some of the highest totals occurred with doppler estimated 2-4″ of rainfall coming very quickly. FOX59 received 2.14″ of rain with 0.5″/hour rain rates.
Fueled by the extremely muggy dew points, the rain just kept coming down for 2-3 hours across Central Indiana. What a way to open August! These oppressively high dew points will be around for one more day before things get more comfortable this weekend.
Scattered storms Friday wit h a cold front
A few bouts of conviction are possible on a scattered basis. A very marginal wind threat exists with any storm along with downpours. That’s because our higher humidity levels will continue for one last day. Depending on when the front passes through, Central Indiana will have a temperature spread! It’s possible our northern counties may not make it to 80° with only the lower-80s in our southern counties.
Dry hours are promised but keep an eye on things if you have outdoor plans.
Dry but hot weekend and beyond
As the last of the rain exits late Friday, heat sticks around for the weekend with a strengthening upper-level ridge this weekend. High pressure will keep things quiet with highs in the mid-to-upper 80s. Yes, it will be humid but not even remotely as close as the last few days.
Highs will make a run at 90° once again by Monday and Tuesday. Then, we’re getting hints of at/below normal temperatures returning to the forecast longer range.
