Everyone is chasing Japan's Hideki Matsuyama at the 2024 Paris Olympics, including his playing partners, the United States' Wyndham Clark and Great Britain's Tommy Fleetwood. Those three will tee it up with American Xander Schauffele seeking to usurp Matsuyama over the second 18 holes at Le Golf National.
Rowdy crowds turned up on Thursday during Round 1 to support the 60 men's golfers in this year's Olympics. So many people were there that it surprised even some players who are used to seeing large crowds at their events.
"That was an experience I never experienced before," said Frenchman Matthieu Pavon. "... That was a crazy moment which I wasn't prepared. At that moment, too big, took emotions, too many people screaming just your name. ... That was something I had to fight a little bit, those emotions, and it was a tough day overall because like the emotions out there, every single shot, every single tee shot, every putt, everybody is pushing you, wants you to do great. So, it's tough to manage all of this."
Pavon, who played with Schauffele and Spain's Jon Rahm on Thursday, will do so again Friday as they all try to make a run at Masuyama. Another big group is Ireland's Rory McIlroy, the United States' Scottie Scheffler and Sweden's Ludvig Åberg; they were a combined 10 under Thursday and will play as one of the later groups in Friday's second round.
"I didn't really know what was going on so I didn't know exactly what to expect," Scheffler said of the crowds. "But it was nice to play in front of a good crowd. Big crowd. It was a lot of fun. They were cheering loud for us. It was pretty fun. Was definitely not expecting that coming in. I didn't really know what to expect but there's definitely more people than I expected."
Here's a look at all the tee times and groups those crowds will be following on Friday.
