Xander Schauffele has become one of the most reconizable golfers in the sport today. He won the Tour Championship in 2017, the 2024 PGA Championship, and the 2024 Open Championship. He also won a gold medal in 2020 in Tokyo and is looking to bring home another at the 2024 Paris Olympics .

Xander’s wife will be rooting for him as will his father, whose own Olympics dreams ended with a terrible accident.

Here’s more on “Golf’s Golden Boy,” his wife, Maya Lowe, and his father, Stefan Schauffele.

Xander’s father, who was born in Stuttgart, Germany, was an elite soccer player and decathlete. Back in 1986, he had hoped to represent his home country in the Olympics but while on his way to decathlon training was hit by a drunk driver. He sustained injuries that kept him from continuing his training and thus his Olympic dreams were gone.

“Hit him pretty much head on,” Xander told CNN Sport of the car that struck his dad. “Went completely blind in his left eye. He was in and out of hospital for two years.

“All his wisdom … it derives from his training when he wanted to become an Olympian. Everything that he’s been through in his life, that trauma that he’s experienced … My dad didn’t want me to feel the trauma but made me realize what the other side looks like as much as he could, just so I’d be more appreciative of what I have and what I’m able to do.”

Stefan served as Xander’s swing coach when he won the gold in Tokyo.

In 2014, Xander met Maya in San Diego while they were both college students. The athlete graduated with a degree in social sciences and his future wife studied science and public health. Maya also earned a Masters degree in healthcare administration in 2019 and previously worked for Planned Parenthood.

Xander and Maya dated for several years and got engaged while vacationing in Maui in 2021. They tied the knot in July of that year during a private ceremony in Las Vegas with just a few close friends, family, and their two dogs in attendance.

A year after saying “I do,” the couple traveled to Japan’s island of Miyakojima. Maya is of Japanese descent and speaks the language fluently, while Xander has several realtives on his mother’s side who live there.

Today, Maya travels the world with her husband for his tournaments and has an active role in the Xander Schauffele Family Foundation, which focuses on both youth golf and “environmental protection and sustainable practices.”

However, Xander admitted that his wife didn’t know much about the sport at all before they got together and had no idea he was a golfer when they met.

After the 2021 Ryder Cup, Maya told him, “I’ve gotten the lingo down” to which he replied, “We’re getting there.”
