ROANOKE, Va. ( WFXR ) — The hot and humid weather continues across Southwest and Central Virginia for the end of the week. Heading into the weekend, isolated to scattered showers and storms are anticipated.
Friday will start mostly dry with a few isolated showers possible. Morning temperatures will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Temperatures will rise into the balmy upper 80s and 90s by the afternoon. A Heat Advisory will go into effect for Nelson, Appomattox, Charlotte, and Halifax counties on Friday. Heat index values between 100 and 105 may occur during the afternoon hours.
Scattered showers and storms will have the chance to move through during the afternoon and evening. The heat and humidity have created instability, so a few stronger storms may develop. The main concerns are gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall.
A cold front will approach from the west on Saturday, keeping scattered showers and storms in the forecast. Some storms may become strong to severe, capable of producing gusty winds. Due to the humid air in place, repeated rounds of heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding concerns. Stay weather-aware. Highs will be in the seasonably warm 80s.
Rain chances will decrease on Sunday as the cold front passes through the region. It will be much quieter weather-wise, but isolated showers and storms are still possible. Overall, there is a slightly greater chance for showers and storms east of the Blue Ridge. Afternoon highs will be in the near-average 80s.
Drier conditions are slated for the first half of the upcoming week. While stray showers and storms cannot be ruled out, much of Southwest and Central Virginia will stay mostly dry on Monday and Tuesday. It will be hot with afternoon temperatures in the upper 80s and 90s.
