Giants' Day 3 draft pick looks 'explosive as advertised' at training camp

The New York Giants may have a sleeper in rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr.

Though the team just got into full pads this week at training camp, the fifth-round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft has been turning heads as the likely backup to starter Devin Singletary.

In his latest 53-man roster projection, Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com had some high praise for the rookie running back.

"Tracy, the fifth-round rookie, has looked as explosive as advertised, especially when he hits the corner," Stapleton wrote.

Tracy, a converted wide receiver, brings the necessary explosiveness and receiving chops to the backfield, making him an ideal change-of-pace option behind Singletary. The biggest question for Tracy will be his development as a pass protector.

While Singletary is likely to work mostly between the tackles on early down, the Giants would be wise to get the rookie in space when they can. His contact balance and elusiveness allow him to pick up chunk yardage at a higher rate.

There's a strong battle taking place on the depth chart behind Singletary. Undrafted free agent rookie Dante "Turbo" Miller has also turned heads with his quickness and explosiveness as a receiving option. Stapleton mentioned Miller as a potential return man on special teams.

Though Tracy was an older prospect coming out of the draft, the Giants have seemingly found an intriguing role player to plug in during obvious passing downs so he'll be an intriguing player to watch when the preseason rolls around next week.
