Cowboys' Dak Prescott again offers big hint about future

Last week, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott hinted that he could leave the only NFL home he's known since the 2016 draft in March 2025 after he plays out the final year of his contract.

Prescott isn't backing down from such threats as of early August.

"Having a kid, your perspective changes a little bit in life," Prescott told Jeff Kolb of Fox 4 on Thursday. "A lot of quarterbacks have (played for other teams). That's just the business and nature of this game. That's just me not being naive to that."

Both Prescott and head coach Mike McCarthy are set to be out of contract following what could become quite the unique campaign for a Cowboys team that's looking to do more than simply qualify for the playoffs. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones clearly isn't extending McCarthy's deal before Week 1, but some remain convinced Jones will lock Prescott down at some point between the first Friday of August and Dallas' regular-season opener at the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 8.

"I’ve got a ton of confidence (about coming to an agreement with the Cowboys), but honestly, it’s not something I think about. I'm here in training camp and focused on this year," Prescott said. "I'm on a contract for this year and that's all I really care about."

As recently as Wednesday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote that Cowboys fans should "feel better about" the Prescott situation after Jacksonville Jaguars starter Trevor Lawrence, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers all helped set the market for players at the position via extensions they inked over the past two months. Prescott's camp reportedly could want a deal worth at least $60M per season to keep him from reaching free agency in March of next year.

"It's not something I look for, or prepare, even plan for, but if something like that happens, I'll certainly be ready for it," Prescott added about testing the open market after the 2024 season.

In short, the 31-year-old suggested he won't be offering Jones any type of hometown discount to put pen to paper on an extension this summer.
