For anyone who has spent time in the Southeastern portion of the United States, you’ll know there’s just nothing like a low country boil. Some might call it a crab boil or shrimp boil, but when claims, shrimp, crawfish, corn, potatoes, and other goodies are boiled together with just the right seasoning, there’s truly nothing else like it. It isn’t always the easiest thing to come by around greater Phoenix, but, if you’re a lover of such food, there’s good news, because a new crab restaurant offering low country boils has officially opened up shop.

As someone who, for a time, lived in the south and worked inside of a popular outdoor seafood restaurant that specialized in crab, shrimp, and low country boils, it’s an entirely different experience. It is one of those meals you can eat with your fingers – just make sure to keep plenty of napkins on hand. If you’re someone who enjoys such a meal, or if you haven’t had the opportunity to do so just yet, The Kickin’ Crab officially opened a new restaurant in Mesa.

The Kickin’ Crab in Mesa can be found at 28 South Dobson Road and is open Monday through Friday from 3 PM until 10 PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM until 10 PM. The restaurant does have a few “crab shack” decor offerings, although, admittingly, it didn’t fully dive into the ambiance (though the original industrial look of the restaurant space likely prevented that from ever being an option).

Seafood in a bag is the restaurant’s take on the “country boil”. While not exactly the same, it does provide a close enough experience. Instead of all the ingredients boiling together in a large vat, which essentially marinates everything in spiced and seasoned water, the seafood in a bag allows you to select ingredients, which will then be combined with a spice mix and shaken up, to give you a full coating of seasoning.

The seafood in a bag price will vary based on market price. The seafood you can choose includes shrimp, mussels, clams, king crab legs, snow crab legs, Dungeness crabs, lobster, and seasonal crawfish. Price is per pound. Seasoning options include garlic butter, cajun, lemon pepper, Louisiana, kickin’ style, KC fiesta (tangy and savory). You can even select your hot level, which includes extra mild, mild, medium, spicy, and spicy spicy. Seafood bag add-ons include boiled egg, corn, potatoes, and sausage.
