Black women have continuously carved out spaces and created businesses that resonate with their communities. Sometimes they even choose to keep the businesses within the family and partner with none other than their own sister. Here are some inspiring stories of Black sister-owned businesses making waves.

    McBride Sisters Wine Company

Founded by half-sisters Robin McBride and Andréa McBride John, the McBride Sisters Wine Company broke barriers in the wine industry. Despite not knowing each other until later in life, these sisters united over their shared love for winemaking. Established in 2005, their company sources grapes from California and New Zealand. They produce a diverse range of wines that cater to every palate. Their wine list includes the popular $25 Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot blend under the Black Girl Magic label.

    DreamGirls Hair Care

Tonya Thompson and Sharie Wilson, the founders of DreamGirls, started their journey as expert hairstylists in Los Angeles. Their passion for empowering women through natural hair care led them to establish DreamGirls in 2006. Initially, it was a salon, but it has since expanded into a product line. Their signature Healthy Hair Care System, priced at $125, has become a favorite among women seeking natural hair growth solutions.

Two Sisters And a Deviled Crab

In Jacksonville, Florida, Jo Neishia Johnson and Kiara Simons transformed their love for cooking into a thriving culinary sensation. Originating from Tampa, the sisters brought their beloved deviled crab recipe to Jacksonville, quickly gaining popularity. They transitioned from a food truck to a full-fledged restaurant within 15 months. Their dedication to creating delectable dishes earned them a loyal following and plans for expanding to multiple locations by 2025.

    Miscellaneous

Located in Orlando’s Ivanhoe Village, Miscellaneous is not just a store. It’s a neighborhood gem founded by sisters Dede and Landrea Cowart. Inspired by their love for curated gifts and local products, the Cowart sisters opened Miscellaneous to provide their community with unique, thoughtful items. Despite facing challenges as young entrepreneurs of color, they created a welcoming space. There, customers can find one-of-a-kind treasures and experience genuine community connections.

    BEM Books & More

Danielle and Gabrielle Davenport have carved out a niche in the literary world with BEM Books & More, an online bookstore dedicated to Black food literature. Named after their grandmothers, Bernice Munford and Marjory Davenport, BEM Books & More aims to celebrate and preserve the rich culinary traditions of the African diaspora. Since its inception in 2021, the bookstore has curated a collection that reflects the diverse narratives and cultural significance of Black foodways.
