The independent film Freedom Hair, directed by Dianne Houston, will make its premiere at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival.

This event will provide attendees with an exclusive first look on the festival’s opening day, Aug 2.

Pre-selected as one of the five best films of the year, Freedom Hair narrates the powerful true story of Melony Armstrong, a woman who challenged the Mississippi government to legitimize professional hair braiding in the state.

The film showcases Armstrong’s journey from working at a domestic violence shelter to founding a natural hair braiding business, empowering herself and others economically.

The story also highlights broader social issues, making it a timely and relevant narrative.

The cast features UK actress Simona Brown, known for her role in Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes, alongside Jeremie Harris and Sophia Bush. Armstrong herself serves as a producer, ensuring the authenticity of her portrayal.

Director Dianne Houston, whose previous works include City of Angels, Soul Food, and Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland, brings her unique perspective as the first and only African American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in any directing category.

Her work on Freedom Hair underscores the resilience and achievements of Black women.

Armstrong’s success in opening Mississippi’s first licensed braiding salon serves as an inspiration to Black women entrepreneurs, demonstrating the importance of following one’s passions despite obstacles.

In a 2020 interview with the Daily Journal, Armstrong expressed her hopes for her legacy, stating, “I pursued what was in my heart; I persisted.”

Following its premiere, Freedom Hair will have a nationwide theatrical release starting August 30, distributed by Vertical.
