Will Carrie Underwood Be a Tough American Idol Judge? ‘I Do Have a Big Problem: I Can’t Lie’

Onetime American Idol champ Carrie Underwood might be too much of a truth teller when she finds herself on the other side of things, seated at the judging dais.
Underwood is joining American Idol for Season 23, filling the seat left vacant by Katy Perry . Underwood will be joined by returning judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, as well as longtime host Ryan Seacrest.
The news was formally announced Thursda y , accompanied by an emotional look back how the country superstar got her start in the music business when she became Idol ‘s fourth-ever winner in 2005.
Appearing on ABC’s Good Morning America on Friday, Underwood was asked if, when it comes to judging, she will be “tough” or “very soft”?
“Well, I do have a big ‘problem’ — I can’t lie, I just can’t,” she shared, suggesting that she’ll offer up candid critiques to Idol hopefuls.
“You can tell [when I lie], so I feel like I’ll be very honest but hopefully I can be very constructive, encouraging….”
Being “honest,” though, does not mean being “hard” on aspiring singers.
“Oh gosh, no,” Underwood said. “I mean, just ask my kids. I feel like I’m not too hard on them.” (Watch her GMA Q&A below.)
Underwood, it should be noted, was among TVLine’s picks for Perry’s potential replacement. As we wrote at the time, “Not only is she an Idol winner, therefore capable of speaking to the contestants from a place of experience, but Underwood also has lots of TV hosting practice under belt via multiple CMA Award ceremonies.”
The new season of American Idol episodes won’t air on ABC /stream on Hulu until early 2025, but Season 23 auditions begin Monday, Aug. 12. The full “ Idol Across America” audition schedule can be found on the show’s official website.
