Liverpool's 4-man transfer shortlist should send shivers down Pep Guardiola's spine

Liverpool is keen on bringing in four players this summer as it looks to bolster Arne Slot's squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign .

While the majority of the Reds rivals have made moves in the transfer market this summer, Liverpool has yet to make a signing. Manchester City has signed Brazilian winger Savinho while Arsenal has brought in Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna.

Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee have signed for Manchester United , who is also chasing Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui. However, Liverpool is yet to enter the market - but that might be about to change.

The Independent report Liverpool is looking to make four signings this summer. The Reds want to bring in a center-back, a defensive midfielder and potentially two wide forwards. The first two of those positions seemingly make sense.

With Joel Matip having left on a free transfer this summer after suffering an ACL injury, Liverpool has four fit center-backs in the form of Virgil van Dijk , Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez , and Jarell Quansah. The latter of those four is still honing his craft at senior level, while Konate has dealt with injuries during the last two seasons.

Liverpool lack a left-footed center-back, which is why it was reportedly interested in Calafiori before he opted to join Arsenal. The Reds also tried on multiple occasions last summer to bring in a defensive midfielder during their engine room revamp but were unable to convince Romeo Lavia or Moises Caicedo to choose Anfield over Chelsea. That led to them bringing in Wataru Endo, who was seen as a stop gap signing.

However, arguably the most interesting part of the Reds four-man shortlist when it comes to signings is the claim they want to potentially add two wide forwards this summer, a position they are well and truly stocked up at. On the left, the Reds have the option of starting Cody Gakpo , Luis Diaz, or Diogo Jota . On the right, they have Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliot, as well as youngster Ben Doak.

But if Slot sees Elliot as someone whose best position is in the middle of the park rather than out wide, a move for another wide forward does make sense. Liverpool has been linked with a number of attackers this summer, with Anthony Gordon and Takefusa Kubo both players the Reds admire.

Liverpool.com says: Liverpool's interest in a defender and a defensive midfielder should come as no surprise. It wanted to sign an elite defensive midfielder last summer and has been linked with a number of center-backs this time around.

Up front, a wide forward, albeit one who can operate off the right, does make sense. But it will be interesting to see whether Liverpool looks to bring in another central striker this summer too. Darwin Nunez is often too erratic and the European Championship performances of Cody Gakpo show he is definitely best operating off the left rather than through the middle.
