Anyone can receive a free naloxone kit at the distribution events by participating in a short training. The training includes identifying risk factors for opioid overdose, recognizing an overdose, calling emergency medical services, giving intranasal naloxone and monitoring the person until help arrives.

    Distribution dates include:

    • Friday, August 9 at Mahoning County Public Health (50 Westchester Drive, Austintown) from 5-7 p.m.; this is a drive-through event, and cars must enter off Westchester Drive.
    • Monday, August 12 at Michael Kusalaba Library and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (2815 Mahoning Avenue, Youngstown) from 12-3 p.m.
    • Wednesday, August 14 at Needles Eye Christian Life Center (74 Kenmore Avenue, Youngstown) from 3-6 p.m.

In 2023, Mahoning County had 156 unintentional overdose deaths, with fentanyl involved in 92% of those deaths, according to a press release from the Mahoning County Public Health office.
