Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) told Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy to “talk to his accountant” in response to Portnoy saying he “sounds like a moron.”

Portnoy criticized Vance over resurfaced comments in which Vance promoted taxing Americans with children at a lower rate than Americans without children. In a 2021 interview with Charlie Kirk , Vance also referred to wanting to “tax” things that are “bad.”

“Let’s tax the things that are bad, and not tax the things that are good,” Vance said. “If you’re making $100,000, $400,000 a year, and you’ve got three kids, you should pay a different, lower tax rate than if you’re making the same amount of money and you don’t have any kids.”

Vance’s team told ABC News , which first recirculated the clip, that Vance is referring to expanding existing child tax credits.

Portnoy responded to the clip on X and accused Vance of promoting taxing childless Americans at a higher rate.

“This is fucking idiotic. You want me to pay more taxes to take care of other people’s kids? We sure this dude is a Republican? Sounds like a moron. If you can’t afford a big family don’t have a ton of kids,” Portnoy wrote.

While speaking on the campaign trail with RealClearPolitics , Vance offered a direct response to Portnoy, saying he’s a fan of Barstool Sports .

“I like Dave. I listen to his podcast and his content from time to time,” he said.

Vance told Portnoy to “talk to his accountant” as his plan was just a beefed-up version of the proposed child tax credit.

“Dave should talk to his accountant about the child tax credit because we have long recognized that we should support working parents in this country,” he said.

Vance insisted he does not support raising taxes on taxpayers who do not have children.

“We are not saying we want to raise the taxes of people who don’t have kids. We are saying we want to support working families because this country has been a disaster for them,” he said.
