New York Giants’ Owner Puts Brian Daboll, GM On Notice For 2024

The New York Giants had a very disappointing season in 2023, which could have head coach Brian Daboll on the hot seat heading into 2024.

Giants owner John Mara applied some pressure to Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen this week, making it clear that he expects progress this year.

“I expect us to take a big step forward,” Mara said, via Michael Eisen of the Giants’ official team website.

And what does that entail? A playoff berth? An NFC East division title? A Super Bowl run?

Mara didn’t go into specifics, but it sounds pretty obvious that he wants the Giants to look a heck of a lot better in 2024 than last season.

“It’s hard to articulate my expectations,” Mara said. “I obviously want to show significant improvement over last year. But I’m not going to make any specific guarantees or demands or anything like that. But they know what I want to see.”

New York went just 6-11 in 2023, which came one year after the Giants made a surprising playoff appearance and even upset the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card Round.

A heck of a lot went wrong for Big Blue last season, but if Daboll and Schoen want job security moving forward, the Giants better be respectable in 2024.

Can the Giants surprise some people this season?

The Giants actually could end up being a rather surprising team in 2024.

New York made some big moves during the offseason, adding star edge rusher Brian Burns and patching up some holes along its offensive line. Additionally, the Giants selected wide receiver Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick of the NFL Draft.

Of course, much of New York’s success hinges on the play of quarterback Daniel Jones, who trudged through a miserable 2023 campaign after an impressive showing the year prior.

Jones tore his ACL after playing in just six games last season, finishing with two passing touchdowns and six interceptions.

The 27-year-old signed a four-year, $160 million contract extension with the Giants in March 2023, but Jones’ deal is not guaranteed beyond 2024.

So, clearly, this is a make or break year for the former first-round pick.

In Jones’ defense, he has never had a legitimate No. 1 receiver since entering the league in 2019, and he has also played behind makeshift offensive lines.

Now, Jones has Nabers, and New York’s offensive line should be better in 2024.

We’ll see if Jones can deliver and potentially save Brian Daboll’s job in the process.
