Paris is dubbed the "City of Love", and that moniker proved to be apt as Chinese badminton stars Huang Ya Qiong and Liu Yuchen got engaged moments after Yaqiong received her Olympic gold medal on Friday.

Ya Qiong and her mixed doubles partner Zheng Siwei defeated South Korean duo Jeong Na-eun and Kim Won-ho in the gold medal match on Friday, and that was not the only piece of jewelry she received.

After being presented with her medal and hearing the national anthem, Yuchen got down on one knee and popped the question. Ya Qiong was stunned and quickly said "yes" in a heartwarming scene at Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

It is not the first proposal of the games in Paris, with Argentina's handball star Pablo Simonet and hockey player Maria Campoy getting engaged after he proposed in the Olympic Village.

Fans both in the arena and on social media were delighted by the romantic moment. One person said on X: "One of the best proposals I've ever seen! Congratulations to both of you."

Another wrote: "Yuchen won the gold medal without playing in the final," and a third added: "That's so sweet! Winning a gold medal and getting proposed to on the same day is like a dream come true."

Ya Qiong, 30, is one of the finest mixed doubles players in the world, claiming a silver medal in Tokyo three years ago before her golden moment in Paris. She also owns three world championship gold medals and has twice won the Asian Championships.

Yuchen, 29, plays men's doubles and won a silver in Tokyo. He also is a world championship gold medallist and will play in Sunday's gold medal match alongside partner Wang Chang against a pair from Chinese Taipei. Yuchen and Chang booked their places in the final after defeating Malaysia in Friday's semifinal.
