A number of Democratic officials have been touted as potential running mates for Vice President Kamala Harris.

But, according to recent polling, one contender is steaming ahead of the pack: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

In a July 29 YouGov poll , 59% of Democratic respondents said they would approve of Buttigieg being chosen as the vice presidential nominee. Out of nine Democratic officials included, he was the only one to garner a majority.

The former mayor of South Bend — who has frequently appeared on Fox News to defend the Democratic agenda — is one of six finalists for the job, according to NBC News.

The others reportedly under consideration are: Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Harris is expected to announce her running mate by Aug. 6 , when she will host a rally in Philadelphia with her pick, according to the Associated Press.

Trailing Buttigieg in the poll were Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Kelly, who received 50% and 49% approval ratings, respectively.

Following them were California Gov. Gavin Newsom, with 48%, and Shapiro, with 44%.

The other four contenders listed in the poll — Beshear, Pritzker, Walz and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper — all received approval ratings of less than 40%.

The poll, conducted between July 24 and 26, sampled 1,143 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 3.9%.

In addition to his dominant approval ratings, Buttigieg also has the highest favorability rating among the top contenders, according to a July 31 YouGov/Economist poll .

Thirty-eight percent of registered voter respondents said they had a very or somewhat favorable view of him. However, he also had the highest disapproval rating, with 37% of respondents saying they had a very or somewhat unfavorable view of him.

Kelly, a former astronaut, came in second, with 33% of respondents saying they had a favorable view of him, followed by Shapiro, with 30%.

Beshear, Cooper and Walz made up the rear, with 24%, 18% and 16%, respectively.

Among Democratic respondents, Buttigieg had an even larger lead, with 69% saying they had a favorable view. Kelly and Shapiro once again came in second and third, with 56% and 51%, respectively. Cooper garnered 31%, and Walz received 28%.

The poll, conducted between July 27 and 30, sampled 1,605 U.S. adults and has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
