Chelsea's Conor Gallagher treatment shows they've got none of Liverpool's class

Chelsea's treatment of Conor Gallagher has shown it has none of Liverpool's class when it comes to looking after its own.

The Blues have banished the England midfielder from first-team training after accepting a $42.2million (£33million/€38.6million) bid from Atletico Madrid for his services, with Enzo Maresca's side keen to offload him this summer in order to avoid losing him for nothing when his contract expires in 12 months time.

Chelsea has offered Gallagher, who is out of contract in 2025, fresh terms to remain at the club but the midfielder has twice rejected his club's approaches of a two-year extension, believing he should be offered an improved deal following his contributions last season.

The former Charlton, Swansea, West Brom and Crystal Palace loanee played a vital role under Mauricio Pochettino with 50 appearances in all competitions, in which he scored seven goals and provided nine assists as captain of the side in Reece James' absence.

Gallagher wants to remain in west London this season but doubts over his guaranteed game time under Maresca have left Chelsea reluctant to offer him improved terms, according to talkSPORT , who also report that Todd Boehly's outfit believe a long-term contract offer would be a financial mistake.

Despite the accepted bid, Gallagher is yet to enter talks with Atletico Madrid, who have given him a deadline of the end of this weekend to reply to their offer. TalkSPORT adds that Chelsea will hold further talks with Gallagher on Friday as it looks to resolve his future, with their latest contract offer still on the table.

The sorry state of affairs, however, is night and day when it comes to Liverpool's treatment of Trent Alexander-Arnold , who is also yet to sign a new deal as he enters the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield .

Like Gallagher, the 25-year-old is also away on his extended break following England's Euro 2024 exploits, meaning progression in sorting his future has been slow. Regardless, the Reds remain desperate for their academy graduate to stay at the club and prevent him from moving to the reportedly interested Real Madrid .

But rather than cut his holiday short and ban him from training in an attempt to get their own way or force him out of the club before his contract runs out, Liverpool has instead done everything to try and please Alexander-Arnold , rather than chase the guaranteed transfer fee it could receive from Real Madrid.

Both Gallagher and Alexander-Arnold are products of their respective clubs' academies, yet only one is interested in treating their player the appropriate way in the final year of their contract. Depending on the outcome of Gallagher's future, Chelsea could do with taking a leaf out of Liverpool's book.
