Paris, often referred to as the "City of Love", lived up to its name when Chinese badminton stars Huang Ya Qiong and Liu Yuchen got engaged just after Yaqiong received her Olympic gold medal on Friday.

Ya Qiong and her mixed doubles partner Zheng Siwei triumphed over South Korean pair Jeong Na-eun and Kim Won-ho in the gold medal match on Friday , but that wasn't the only piece of jewellery she was given.

After being awarded her medal and listening to the national anthem , Yuchen knelt down and proposed. Ya Qiong was taken aback and quickly said "yes" in a touching moment at Porte de La Chapelle Arena.

This isn't the first proposal of the games in Paris, with Argentina's handball star Pablo Simonet and hockey player Maria Campoy getting engaged after he proposed in the Olympic Village .

Fans both in the arena and on social media were thrilled by the romantic gesture . One person commented on X: "One of the best proposals I've ever seen! Congratulations to both of you."

Another posted: "Yuchen won the gold medal without playing in the final," and a third chimed in: "That's so sweet! Winning a gold medal and getting proposed to on the same day is like a dream come true."

Ya Qiong, 30, is one of the world's top mixed doubles players, having won a silver medal in Tokyo three years ago before her golden moment in Paris . She also has three world championship gold medals and has twice been victorious at the Asian Championships.

Yuchen, 29, a men's doubles player and Tokyo silver medallist, is also a world championship gold medallist . He will compete in Sunday's gold medal match with partner Wang Chang against a duo from Chinese Taipei.
