Couple Trusted An Owl To Be The Ringbearer At Their Wedding, & Shocker, It Flew Away With The Rings For 7 Hours

They say it’s good luck for it to rain on your wedding day… so does anyone know if an owl flying off with your wedding rings is a good omen as well?

An English couple getting married last month had their feathers ruffled when the trained owl they were counting on to be a special part of their ceremony went rogue. The wedding was taking place at Kirkstall Abbey in England, and the owl was supposed to be the couple’s ringbearer – delivering them their rings when it was given the signal.

It did not end up doing that.

Instead, the ringbearing owl ditched the wedding party of 5o people, flying up into the top of the abbey and setting up shop in a window sill high above the ceremony – with the rings in tow.

According to first hand accounts, those at the wedding were in complete shock, and the couple getting married were described as “devastated.” The owl’s professional handler was apparently trying everything to lure the owl back down to the wedding, but not even loose pieces of chicken could tempt the owl away from its perch.

To give you a good idea of the timeline of the wedding, this wasn’t something that happened and resolved itself in a matter of minutes. This was a long, drawn out, painstaking incident. The owl flew off with the rings around 1 PM, and didn’t return with them until (drum roll please) 8 PM. It was just doing its own thing for SEVEN STRAIGHT HOURS.

Though the owl eventually came back with the rings, it ultimately impacted the wedding ceremony for the worse. A person that wasn’t attending the wedding – but just so happened to be there at the venue at the same time – captured a lot of the highlights (or lowlights, depending on how you look at the situation) on video.
