Orville Peck Enlists Three ‘Rhinestone Cowboys’ for a ‘Gay Dream Come True’

What better way to end a gay country album than by singing with four gay country singers? On Friday, Orville Peck released his new LP Stampede , which concludes with a cover of Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy” alongside TJ Osborne, Waylon Payne, and Fancy Hagood.

“You know how you make ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ gayer?… well now you know,” wrote the Brothers Osborne frontman, who came out in 2021, on Instagram. “I am as obsessed as I am honored to be a part of @orvillepeck ‘s latest album ‘Stampede’ alongside the legends that are @fancyhagood @waylonpayne.”

Osborne jokingly hashtagged the post #TheHighGayMen, playing on the name of the country music supergroup the Highwaymen. “The Highgay Men ride at dawn!!” wrote Hagood in his post. “I always wanted to be in a boy band and @orvillepeck went and made all my gay dreams come true!!”

Peck’s Stampede — a complete version of a seven-track Vol. 1 he dropped in May — featured multiple A-list collaborators, including Kylie Minogue , Elton John, Beck, and Midland. The complete edition includes new songs and stars, including Teddy Swims on “Ever You’re Gone,” Molly Tuttle on “Papa Was a Rodeo,” and Mickey Guyton on “Where Are You Now?”

“I started working on this album during a very hard time in my life but in doing so, I rediscovered a passion, a sense of creativity, and a joy for music that I thought I had lost,” Peck wrote in an Instagram post Friday. “I will always be grateful for that and for getting to work with every artist on this album. My idols, peers and friends who have inspired me for years.”

“I hope y’all enjoy this album and dive into it with the same sense of adventure that we did making it. Run free, Stampede ,” he continued.

Peck dropped the album’s first single “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other ” alongside Willie Nelson in April. “With all the rhetoric surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community these days, it is so encouraging to have real allies like Willie that aren’t afraid to stand proudly next to us,” Peck told Rolling Stone at the time.
