NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – It’s back to school time. Parents, you know what that means – you have to sign school forms. And, one form is critical this year for your child’s health. School nurses say they could be in a tricky spot if you don’t sign it.

If your district sent home a medical waiver, J.C. Bowman with Professional Educators of Tennessee says it’s important to sign it. “The number one thing they need to do is make sure they sign the form.”

Bowman represents school nurses and teachers statewide. He said they are concerned some parents won’t sign the waiver, and due to the new law, school staff won’t be able to provide medical care.

“They’re nervous. In fact, they are angry about it. They feel like they weren’t allowed to weigh in on the bill,” said Bowman. “Make sure that they get that form signed and in quickly so that the school can act on that. And then trust and verify. Call and make sure it’s entered into that.”

The Families’ Rights and Responsibilities Act passed this session. It requires parental consent for a student’s medical care at school or any public health facility but also makes an exception if a child is suffering from an emergency.

“This bill, Mr. Representative is a bill that puts into law that parents truly have the right for the direction of their children and their life,” said Rep. Jeremy Faison, Republican from Cosby while he spoke about the bill during the legislative session.

The sponsors of the bill say this does not put mandates on schools, and they are open to any tweaks that might improve the law in the future. Still, Bowman is concerned about the repercussions school staff could face.

“If you violate the law and you are a doctor or nurse, healthcare provider, you can lose your license, you can have it revoked, suspended or non-renewed,” said Bowman.
