WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Texoma is back in 100-plus-degree weather and with these extreme temperatures and drought, we want to remind you of the dangers of wildfires.

Firefighters warn that the combination of extreme heat and dry conditions has created a perfect storm for wildfires, posing significant threats to both nature and local property.

Cloud cover brings slight cool down this weekend

According to Wichita Falls Fire Marshall Craig Berend, higher temperatures combined with lower humidity can cause grassfires to ignite and strong winds push the fires in North Texas.

“We’ve had a fair amount of rain this spring and that has only increased the vegetation, which adds to the fuel. With higher temperatures, firefighters get tired quicker and all of that helps deplete our resources.” Berend said.

Berend stressed the importance of community collaboration in wildfire prevention and response efforts.

“It’s important for them to be diligent to keep their properties maintained to the best of their ability. Also, let us know if they have an event planned or if they know they’re going to be burning if we’re not in a burn ban,” Berend said.

Berend advised calling 911 before trying to put a fire out, as it will at least have fire officials en route.

Another thing to be mindful of is making 911 calls regarding smoke. You only want to call if you see smoke, not just over a smell.

As temperatures continue to soar and drought persists, the battle against wildfires remains a concern, but with communities and firefighters working together, there is hope of mitigating their impact.
