I just wanted to play great music with my friends, as lofty a goal as I have most of the time. However, the recent passing of my grandfather added more weight to everything.” On tour with his quintet last year, McCullough realized midway through the first concert that it was his grandfather’s birthday. “It brought home the importance of being surrounded by good friends and family both to grieve and to celebrate.” In these hills, beyond documents their last two nights at the North Street Cabaret in Madison, Wisconsin, capturing a level of musical communication and camaraderie that only develop through a band playing night after night on the road.

If discovery is an element, and most certainly it is if one is an adventurous listener, uncovering new talent motivates your listening habits. With a release like Integration!, the exploration is nearly effortless. For those not yet familiar with the label Jersika Records, the album is a Latvian production under the careful guidance of its chief Mareks Ameriks. For the technical nerds out there, Integration! was captured on analog reel-to-reel tape using a Studer B 67 ¼" two-track tape recorder without editing or overdubbing. The vinyl was cut directly from the original masters on a Neumann VMS70 cutting lathe using a Neumann SX74 cutting head. Translated for the rest of us, the vinyl LP has extraordinarily good sound.

As a jazz journalist, attending summer festivals is almost a rite of passage, a journey to a place where so many pieces of the international jazz community are gathered in one spot to sample, or to indulge oneself. Over the years, accompanied by repeated visits, the sights and sounds of the festival locations become clearer and more familiar, the vibe more encompassing. You come to realize that many festival sites become jazz deserts once the festival circus leaves town. They are simply geographic annual event coordinates, a brief gathering spot. There are others however, that rise to international acclaim as an outgrowth of a local scene that includes a thriving mentorship cycle creating a jazz continuum of sorts. A city where music comes first, and generations of talent are produced to inevitably leave and impact the jazz community worldwide. Detroit is such a place. While jazz journalists typically are aware of the city's impact on jazz and pop music culture, few outside of the state of Michigan would ever have ventured there to experience the thriving local scene if not for the annual jazz festival that takes place for four days out of each year.
