This saw an opening at the starting spot in New England, a position in which Zappe had filled in throughout the past two years in lieu of Jones. But after bringing in three others at the position, Zappe appears to be the odd man out.
New England brought back f ormer back-up in journeyman Jacoby Brissett , a quarterback who has had moderate success starting around the league. Brissett appears to be in a battle with first-round pick from this past years class in Drake Maye, who the Pats spent the third overall selection on.
This, leaving one potential spot open at quarterback, with teams occasionally carrying three players and almost never having four on the roster, with Zappe in competition with sixth-round rookie Joe Milton.
And this past week, Milton was given snaps over Zappe, with the third-year quarterback given not one single rep in practice on Thursday.

Multiple reports coming out of Patriots' training camp have suggested that Zappe's playing time has consistently diminished from the past few days - with the team giving more opportunities to Milton ahead of him.
Speaking on his chances of carving out a role for himself this year, Zappe told reporters: "That’s really up to the coaches and what they think and what they see fit.
"Mayo has preached quality over quantity. So that’s kinda been my mindset going into this whole training camp. Whether it’s five or 10, or today none, I’m going to do everything I can to help the team win, as far as helping Jacoby out, helping Drake out after when they go through their series.
"I think the reps are going to come. That’s stuff’s going to come. I believe in the coaches and everything. I think if the opportunity presents itself."
