New Glades Coming to Boyne Mountain Resort, Michigan

Nearly eighteen acres of fresh, gladed terrain are coming to Boyne Mountain Resort, Michigan, next winter.

The new terrain is located between Grice's Way and Zippie's below the upper terminal of the Disciples 8 Chairlift, which was installed ahead of the 2022-2023 ski season. Most of the forested areas are completely new, but one is a clean-up of previously gladed terrain.

Tyler Hollingsworth, Boyne's ski patrol supervisor, is leading the project. He said via email that there will be a few more glades in addition to those found in the main area: "We can't help ourselves to not create a few hidden gems." Difficulty-wise, the terrain ranges from easy to moderate.

"The area that was chosen as the start of the project was done so with the purpose of creating a playground for all skiers and riders. You can expect to find wide open low-angle areas progressing to tighter multi-pitched terrain," Hollingsworth said.

Much of the glading work involves removing smaller, new-growth trees. To reduce the project's impact to mature trees and the involved terrain, Hollingsworth is committed to not using any heavy equipment.

"It is a time consuming process, but is extremely rewarding when you look back at the work you've completed and take a minute to get lost in the thoughts of skiing it," Hollingsworth said. "People are excited that Boyne Mountain is committing to glade skiing and can't wait to see what is created."

The plan is to continue creating and maintaining more glades all over Boyne.

"We have great topography here at Boyne Mountain and we're really excited to open up new adventures for all levels of skiers," said Hollingsworth.

Another improvement is also coming to Boyne next season: eight new SMI full auto super polecats, six of which will be in Victor area, allowing the ski area to start the season earlier and keep it going later. The other two will be installed on the Tubing Hill.
