Anthony Gordon transfer latest as Liverpool stance confirmed amid Newcastle contract decision

Liverpool remains interested in Anthony Gordon, although Newcastle will be aiming to stop any renewed attempts to sign him dead in its tracks.

The Reds’ attempts to bring Gordon to Anfield are well documented by this point. Fans were taken slightly by surprise when news emerged earlier in the summer of talks breaking down despite Newcastle desperately needing to raise funds to ease its profit and sustainability concerns.

The Magpies’ demand for Jarell Quansah to move in the opposite direction as part of the deal was a complete non-starter for Liverpool, such is the regard with which the young defender is held in. In the end, Newcastle found other means to quell their worries, and the move has yet to be revisited.

What wasn’t known at the time though – at least publicly – was just how close Liverpool came to signing Gordon. It emerged this week that a $96m (£75m/€89m) deal was agreed to bring the former Everton star back to Merseyside , with Joe Gomez moving in the opposite direction for $58m (£45m/€53m).

Newcastle, though, was always reluctant to let Gordon go, and once transfers were agreed for Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to move on, it pulled the plug on the deal. Liverpool doesn’t look to be taking no for an answer just yet, however.

The ECHO has confirmed that the Reds have maintained their interest, and that Gordon would likely jump at the chance to join his boyhood club, having grown up as a Liverpool fan. Newcastle though is now in a much stronger position to fend off any interest, even if their player’s head has been turned .

According to The Athletic , the St James’ Park club wants to reward the progress Gordon has made. Contract talks look to be in the offing, which could give a clear indication of where the 23-year-old sees his future.

Gordon’s current deal expires in 2026, with Newcastle no doubt hoping to extend his stay, or at the very least maximize the fee they would receive from Liverpool.

Liverpool.com says: This definitely feels like one that will not be disappearing anytime soon. Even if Newcastle manages to tie Gordon down to a new deal, it might just be a case of delaying the inevitable.

Liverpool has firmly shown its hand, and Gordon hasn’t exactly been shy about showing his admiration for the club. The power does seem to lie with the player now, and it feels as though he could force through a move this summer if he wants to.

Even if he were to sign a new contract, that doesn’t necessarily rule Liverpool out of signing him further down the line. Reds fans know from Luis Suarez that a new contract can just be a way for a club to safeguard itself in the present.
