On August 3, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif returns to action at Paris 2024 for a quarterfinal match against Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori in the welterweight category (66 kgs).
On Thursday, a huge gender row erupted following Khelif’s first-round stoppage win over Italy’s Angela Carini. One flush right hand from the Algerian boxer forced Carini to inform her corner that she wanted to withdraw. The bout lasted just 46 seconds.
The reason for the controversy is that Khelif was disqualified from the World Championships last year due to failing a gender eligibility test and having high testosterone levels. These tests were conducted by the IBA, who claim the specifics of the tests and how they were conducted are confidential.

On social media, Khelif has been labeled “transgender” or “intrasex”, neither of which is accurate. The 25-year-old was born female and is rumored to have a condition known as DPD (Differences in Sexual Development). She has therefore been cleared to fight by the IOC, who removed the IBA as a governing body in June 2023.
