'Cousin wants me to apologize for correcting his son's Irish name - but I'm in the right'

What would you do if a family member was mispronouncing their own child's name?

This was the predicament faced by one woman who took to Reddit for advice. She explained that her family is of Irish descent , but she has several cousins living in England, including one named Liam.

She's currently studying at a university in England and has a 3 year old son. They live just an hour away from Liam, so they recently decided to arrange a meet-up so their sons could get acquainted. Liam's son is named Oisin.

The woman clarified that Oisin is "an Irish name that is meant to be pronounced like 'oh sheen,' in accordance with the old Gaelic tradition of nothing being pronounced like it's spelled."

She had met Liam a few times during their childhood, but as adults, they've only communicated via text. As such, she had never heard how Liam pronounces his son's name she had only seen it written down.

"We went to the park, we met up with them, and I said "this must be Oisin"."

Liam questioned why she pronounced it "oh sheen," which left her puzzled. He then explained that it should be pronounced "oi sin," similar to the pronunciation of "hoisin" sauce.

Initially, she chose not to correct him as she didn't want to appear arrogant. Her son also has a distinctly Irish name, which led Liam to express surprise at her apparent mispronunciation of Oisin.

"They asked what I meant by that and I said it's an Irish name, it's pronounced 'oh sheen' and 'oi sin' is probably just a result of the Irish language tricking people."

Things took a tense turn, and the cousins split on bad terms. She received a call later from Liam's parents, demanding she apologise.

Now, Liam's wife fears they've been saying their son's name wrong all along.
