Pet Parents Cultivate Perfect Crop for Their Digging Dachshund

Having a garden and pets doesn’t always go well together. The soft beds of freshly turned soil often attract our dogs to nap or dig, neither of which is ideal for a plentiful harvest. But instead of getting frustrated by their darling dog, these parents found a crop that could make everyone happy.

This good Dachshund boy had fun and did great with his assigned task. Watch this video from July 20 to see him hard at work.

What a good way for this Twiglet (@ twiglet_the_sausage_ ) to release some energy and bond with his parents. Dachshunds were originally bred for hunting small game because of their elongated bodies and strong, short legs, which are perfect for digging and maneuvering through tight underground spaces. So, it’s no surprise that he’s a natural at pulling up potatoes. Once he has one in his mouth, he shakes his head, almost signaling to his human that he’s found another. What a good boy! It’s so much nicer to have an activity in the garden that our dogs can benefit from than always yelling at them to stay out of the plants. Not to mention, he’s so happy to be helping his family and doing his job!

    Benefits of Digging

Digging is not just a behavior; it’s an excellent exercise for dogs like Dachshunds, and it can help keep them fit and healthy. In addition to exercise, searching and finding engages a dog’s mind, providing mental enrichment . Allowing dogs to engage in natural behaviors like digging can help them expend their abundant energy and make them happier and more content. However, it’s important to have designated areas for digging and always keep pups supervised so they don’t begin looking for vegetables in unwanted areas.

This hard-working fellow entertained people. Viewer @ilianacambambia remarked, “May I hire this hard worker for my garden next? How much is the charge per hour?” Perhaps he might consider his pay in treats. Viewer @bodybyary inquired, “Ok, mine is harvesting them before they even finish growing! How do we stop that problem?” Ha! To prevent this, these clever parents ensured they used elevated plant beds, which was a good choice. Viewer @hayleyroberts___ shared, “We have a fruit and veg harvester! She digs for spuds, picks fruit, and enjoys seeded broccoli.” Wow! Just like with kids, working in the garden can encourage healthy eating!

Next year, I might consider getting a few elevated planters and seeing if my small dog is willing to take in the harvest. The only challenge I might face is the bath she will need when she's done.
