Fun, weekend project anyone? Don't let the TikTok videos fool you: Not every home DIY project has to require 10,000 tools, a mess of paint swatches, a tent for spray painting, and the kitchen sink. Some only require the basics: your go-to cleaning solution, a sander (or stripper), and your preferred paint. Oh, and trip to your local Goodwill. DIYer and mom of two, Miroslava, just proved how easy, fairly quick, and affordable a quick furniture update can be. She took an old hutch that likely wouldn't turn any guests' heads upon entering your home into a "Where did you find this?!" kind of statement piece.

Watch her turn this thrifted Goodwill hutch that's seen better days into a modern, sophisticated standout for her home. (And I dare you to attempt not being inspired. Spoiler Alert: It's impossible!)

"Transforming this beautiful piece I found at Goodwill ," she captioned the tutorial video. "It was a time-consuming project but very well worth it."

Worth it, indeed! Check out this still of the hutch in its original thrifted condition.

Moral of the story: Never count out Goodwill.

To be fair, the hutch isn't in the worst condition possible. As thrifter and DIYer myself, I've seen dirtier and jankier, most certainly. Still, it appears dated thanks to its brown wood, worn-out hardware, and nicks. However, its stunning arch shape and intact glass-paneled doors  makes for the perfect foundation for an upgrade.

Miroslava cleaned and sanded the hutch, then taped off the glass panels on its doors to paint without creating a scrape job later (there's also a Chapstick hack for this if you're pressed for time). Next, she grabbed an onyx paint hue and brush, then took to the hutch by hand!

As time-consuming as painting by hand can be, it was the interior updates that really made the difference for this hutch. Miroslava brightened  the interior with a soft, cream hue — creating more visual contrast for the black exterior.

The brightened interior — including the shelf trimming — perfectly sets up whatever the hutch might hold for a much easier visual. The items would only be absorbed by the original brown-on-brown, making the hutch more useful for storage than gorgeous design. The white backing also helps the hutch settle visually into the room more, given the adjacent white walls. Miroslava's exclamation point to the display? An added light to further modernize the hutch and gives it a museum feel.

    Gorgeous!

This transformation delivers West Elm levels of beauty on a thrift store budget. For perspective, a similar arched hutch with glass doors on West Elm costs over $2,000. The Arhaus Hattie cabinet version would raise you to over $3,000. If you're sticking to a super budget, then Wayfair has one for $299 . And even that though can't top a $20 Goodwill piece, a can of paint and an LED light install.

Feeling inspired? I told you so! I'll race you to Goodwill.

Millions of us do this and we don’t need Goodwill to do it.
