Caeleb Dressel took two big punches to the gut on Friday.

The 27-year-old Florida native finished sixth in the 50-meter freestyle final and then even failed to qualify for the finals in the 100-meter butterfly after winning gold in both events three years ago in Tokyo.

“It’s a shocking moment for a lot of you watching at home. We can’t believe it either,” NBC analyst Rowdy Gaines said on the broadcast.

After finishing both events, Dressel could be seen in tears off to the side of the pool, hugging a member of Team USA’s swimming staff.

Back with another day of prelims, we saw a few veterans of the sport make their Paris debuts, and we saw seasoned athletes and newcomers alike continue their hot streak in the pool. This morning’s events, the women’s 200 backstroke, men’s 50 freestyle, men’s 200 IM, and women’s 4×200 freestyle relay will all be competed again tonight, alongside the women’s 200 butterfly, men’s 200 backstroke, and women’s 200 breaststroke. We’ll get to see Regan Smith take on the 200 backstroke semifinal/200 butterfly final double, with the two events looking to be around an hour apart from each other. Today’s finals session, like the others, will start at 2:30 EST.

Manuel, one of the biggest stars of America’s women’s swimming team, didn’t qualify Saturday for the semifinals in the 50-meter freestyle at the Paris Olympics. 



It was a shockingly early elimination for the five-time Olympic medalist and the first Black woman to win an individual gold medal in swimming.

Manuel, 27, posted the 18th-fastest preliminary time (24.87 seconds) in the sprint across one length of the pool.
