Director Justin Simien says the planned Lando spinoff series for Disney+ is no longer moving forward.

Inspired by the film Solo: A Star Wars Story , which starred Donald Glover , the spinoff series was first announced in 2020 with Donald and Stephen Glover attached to write.

While speaking to Collider on Friday, Simien said that the Lando project won’t be happening.

The famed director is making his rounds to promote the MGM+ docuseries Hollywood Black , which is based on the book by scholar Donald Bogle exploring race and representation in Hollywood.

During the conversation, he was asked how the Lando project is going.

“It was pretty developed,” he said. “There was a Bible. There was concept art. There were scripts. But it just wasn’t meant to be.”

He added that he was pretty bummed that the project got canned.

“For me, it has to be done pretty straight on. Like, ‘I am in grief. I do not feel good.’ I have to let myself feel those feelings,” he said. “There’s so much that I experience that I get to keep forever and take into the next project. I can’t obviously take the storyline or the IP or the characters, but there’s so much more that I got, as a maker, and that’s mine. Sorry, it’s too late, you can’t take that part back.”

On the surface, there doesn’t seem to be a particular reason why the project was shelved. Simien and Glover together is a recipe for success, but they both have a lot on their plates.

Simien has been working on a live-action Star Trek comedy series starring Tawny Newsome and Glover may very well be working on the Community movie for Peacock .

The logline for Simien’s Star Trek series reads: “Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.”

“I literally grew up watching that show and wishing I could go to space,” Simien told Collider about the Star Trek project. “I’m living that childhood dream right now.”

Hollywood Black premieres on August 11 on MGM+.
