Wisconsin youth continue navigating mental health crisis

MADISON, Wis. -- The Department of Public Instruction released data Tuesday that shows Wisconsin students are still dealing with unprecedented mental health challenges.

The DPI said the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey Summary Report provides a window into the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of Wisconsin's youth. Students generally reported experiencing significant health challenges while having fewer supports at school and at home, and reported an additional increase in social media and screen usage with a decrease in the amount of sleep they get each night.

The DPI said more than half of students reported experiencing anxiety, and about one in three reported experiencing depression every day for two weeks in a row or more. LGBTQ+ and female students also reported a disproportionate amount of mental health challenges compared to their peers, with 65-80% reporting experiencing anxiety and 45-63% reporting experiencing depression. Only one out of five students in the summary report indicated they receive the help they need "most of the time" or "always."

The DPI said one of many proven strategies to support Wisconsin students is being supportive adults. Youth who may be struggling are encouraged to contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline , supported and funded by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
