Christopher Furnace, also known as @Christopher_585, shared his unique shopping situation on X, warning potential customers to double-check the prices of individual items in their purchases.
"Ugh not the Dollar General cashier discounting two of my items more than what they were supposed to be," Christopher posted, leaving some social media users confused.
Scanning an item at the register and having it ring up as less than what was expected shouldn't be a cause for concern.
"Obviously I normally wouldn’t complain about this," he explained.
"My total came to $38 instead of $40, so my $10 off $40 didn’t apply," he added, alongside a weary face emoji.
Christopher initially believed he was getting an additional deal on his purchases, saving $2 off his formerly-$40 transaction.
However, the $2 discount ended up costing him more money than he would have paid in the first place.
Because his purchase didn't reach the $40 minimum required to use his $10 off coupon, Christopher ended up spending $8 more than he would have had he not received the unexpected savings.
Had he spent $40 as planned, his $10 coupon would have made his transaction cost $30, plus any taxes and fees.
However, by unexpectedly saving $2 between a few items in his cart, he ended up falling short of the minimum.
Despite Christopher's pleas, Dollar General wouldn't honor his coupon, leaving him to spend $8 more than he originally planned.
Dollar General has come under fire in the past for allegedly overcharging its customers.
At least 1,000 dollar stores to close, CEO says
Dollar Tree, the parent company of Family Dollar, revealed it would close around 1,000 stores in the coming years.
The company announced in March that it will shutter the stores after the discount retailer it acquired nearly a decade ago plummeted in value.
Dollar Tree plans to close about 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of this year.
This will be followed by the shuttering of 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next several years.
The chain of discount variety stores has also indicated that sales are being affected by the cost-of-living crisis and inflation.
But USA Today added that Dollar Tree has also been rocked by reduced government benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
This has left families struggling to juggle finances, with as much as $250 less per month.
Shoppers can buy anything from Halloween decor to candy and other essentials at a fraction of the cost compared to other stores.
The budget retailer has gone viral on social media for offering dupes on products from Anthropologie, Pottery Barn, Ulta, and Michaels, among other brands.

In July 2024, a spokesperson for the retailer told The U.S. Sun the store and its employees "remain committed to ensuring a safe working environment for our employees and a pleasant shopping experience for our customers."
Since 2017, OSHA has found 111 instances of the discount store violating basic workplace safety measures, racking up over $21 million in workplace safety fines and fees.
