French pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati's Olympic dreams were dashed in an unusual way after his own manhood got in the way.

Ammirati was on the brink of clearing 5.70m in his third qualifying attempt, a feat that would have secured him a place in Monday's final. However, his manhood knocked the bar, causing it to fall and extinguishing his medal hopes.

Ammirati finished 12th in Group A with a height of 5.60m, leaving spectators amused by the unique end to his Olympic journey. "Anthony Ammirati is having a 'hard' time during his jump," one fan quipped.

"Anthony Ammirati failed the bar and the commentators are already having a hard time acknowledging what happened. Help I'm dying," another chimed in. A third added: "Unlucky but also good flex".

Fellow Frenchmen Robin Emig and Thibaut Collet also didn't make it past the qualifiers.

"When people say that the Games are different, well, it really is different," a disappointed Collet remarked post-event.

"Today, I missed my competition. I knew that this qualification was going to be tough and now I'm taking it in the face. The Olympic Games are over. I'm going to pack my bags before going home."

French sports academy Envol posted a tribute to Ammirati which he re-shared. He did not address the moment which went viral from the competition.

"We are proud of you @anthony_ammirati," the academy's Instagram post read in French. "Despite the last two physically disrupted weeks, you managed to be there, even if we are frustrated like you for this bar at 5m70. We wish you to live an unforgettable Olympic experience."
