Win No. 18 was the biggest to date for
Umar Nurmagomedov .
The Dagestani standout kept his undefeated record intact, taking a five-round verdict over
Cory Sandhagen in the
UFC on ABC 7 headliner at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Not only did Nurmagomedov hold an expected advantage in the wrestling department, but he was also able to outstrike his lanky adversary. With six consecutive victories in
Ultimate Fighting Championship competition, it’s going to be difficult to deny Nurmagomedov a bantamweight title shot in his next fight.
Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC on ABC 7, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.
5: Consecutive bantamweight triumphs for Nurmagomedov, tying him with
Montel Jackson for the third-longest active winning streak in the division behind only
Merab Dvalishvili (nine) and
Mario Bautista (six). Nurmagomedov’s overall UFC winning streak currently stands at six.
94: Significant strikes landed by Nurmagomedov. By comparison, Sandhagen landed 71. Sandhagen’s total exceeds the combined figure (26) landed by Nurmagomedov’s first five UFC opponents. Still, Nurmagomedov landed more significant strikes than Sandhagen in every round but the first. The Dagestani is the second person to outland Sandhagen in UFC competition. The first, however, was
Aljamain Sterling , who landed two significant strikes before submitting Sandhagen in 88 seconds into the clash at UFC 250.
5: Takedowns landed in 13 attempts for Nurmagomedov, who also logged 5:11 of control time in the bout. Sandhagen failed on both of his takedown tries and enjoyed just 12 seconds of control time.
19: Takedowns landed by Nurmagomedov in his UFC career. He has landed five on three different occasions.
1: Knockdown landed by
Deiveson Figueiredo against
Marlon Vera , making him the first opponent to floor “Chito” in 24 Octagon appearances. That strong finish helped propel Figueiredo to a unanimous decision triumph over Vera.
3-0: Record for Figueiredo since moving to 135 pounds. Interestingly enough, the Brazilian has been outstruck in all three of his bantamweight appearances. However, he does have a 7-0 advantage in takedowns landed in those bouts.
4:39:51: Career fight time for Vera at 135 pounds, the most in the history of the division. “Chito” spent 15 minutes in the Octagon on Saturday to extend his lead over second place
Pedro Munhoz (3:57:12).
8: Consecutive defeats in UFC competition for
Tony Ferguson following his first-round submission loss to
Michael Chiesa in a featured welterweight bout. That gives “El Cucuy” sole possession of the record for longest losing streak in promotion history.
B.J. Penn is No. 2 with a seven-bout skid under the UFC banner.
160: Significant striking accuracy for Chiesa (4-25) before he was able to secure the fight-ending rear-naked choke against Ferguson.
9: Strawweight victories for
Mackenzie Dern , tying her for fifth most in UFC history. Dern took a unanimous verdict over
Lupita Godinez to snap a two-fight skid.
6: Finishes in UFC competition since 2019 for
Joel Alvarez , who stopped
Elves Brener in the third round of their lightweight clash on Saturday. That ties him with
Islam Makhachev ,
Jim Miller and
Jalin Turner for third most in the division during that period. Only
Charles Oliveira (eight) and
Drew Dober (seven) have finished more fights.
21: Finishes among 21 professional victories for Alvarez. The Spaniard saw a third round for just the third time in his career against Brener.
50: Significant strikes by which Alvarez outlanded Brener. “El Fenomeno” notably outlanded his foe 67 to 17 to the head and 24 to 7 to the body.
4: Consecutive fights with at least one knockdown for
Azamat Murzakanov , tying him with
Ilia Topuria ,
Steve Garcia and
Bruno Silva for the third-longest active streak in the UFC behind only
Montel Jackson (seven) and
Carlos Ulberg (five). Murzakanov defeated
Alonzo Menifield by second-round technical knockout in their preliminary light heavyweight encounter.
11:58: Total control time for
Shamil Gaziev in a unanimous decision triumph over Don’Tale Mayes at heavyweight. Gaziev was successful on two of three takedowns and outlanded his foe by an 89-to-57 count in total strikes to rebound from his first career defeat this past March.
1,386: Days since
Guram Kutateladze ’s last win, a split-decision triumph over
Mateusz Gamrot in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 180 on Oct. 17, 2020. Kutateladze weathered a first-round knockdown to rally for a unanimous decision victory against
Jordan Vucenic to return to the win column at UFC on ABC 7.
97: Significant strikes landed by
Sam Hughes in a split-decision triumph over the previously undefeated
Victoria Dudakova at strawweight. That’s a career best for Hughes in nine Octagon appearances. By comparison, Dudakova landed 61 significant strikes in defeat.
4: Career knockdowns landed in eight UFC appearances for
Jai Herbert , who floored
Rolando Bedoya in the opening stanza of their lightweight clash. The “Black Country Banger” is 2-2 in bouts in which he has landed a knockdown after outpointing Bedoya on Saturday.
278: Combined total strikes landed by
Sedriques Dumas (95) and
Denis Tiuliulin (183) in their preliminary middleweight clash. While their volume was impressive, only 75 of those strikes were significant, with Dumas holding a 49-to-26 edge in that category en route to a unanimous decision triumph.
