Olympics Day 9 briefing: Team USA racks up medals, upsets and more history made in Paris

The second weekend of the Paris Games started off with some epic competition. Here's the latest from Saturday's Olympic action.

Early Saturday morning, the American doubles teams won medals in the men's tennis tournament. The pair of Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram earned silver , while the duo of Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul won bronze . Ram became the oldest tennis player to win an Olympic medal since 1920.

In basketball, Team USA women's 3x3 won its fifth straight game Saturday, defeating China 21-13 and incredibly advancing to the semifinals after starting the Paris Games 0-3. The men's basketball squad beat Puerto Rico 104-83, completing an undefeated group stage Saturday to advance to Tuesday's quarterfinal. Anthony Edwards led the team in scoring with 26 points and riled up the crowd with an insane windmill dunk in the fourth quarter.

In swimming, Team USA won gold and broke the world record in the mixed 4x100 medley relay Saturday. But most shockingly, American Alex Walsh was disqualified from the women's 200 individual medley final after she thought she won bronze. Judges determined Walsh did not complete a legal turn going from backstroke to breaststroke. Australia's Kaylee McKeown, who finished fourth, by rule got the bronze.

Meanwhile in track and field, Team USA's Ryan Crouser won his third straight gold in shot put, the first time that's ever happened in the event. Sha'Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson won silver and bronze, respectively, in the 100m dash Saturday . Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the gold medalist from 2008 and 2012, surprisingly dropped out of the event in the semifinals. St. Lucia's Julien Alfred won the gold by a large margin, her country's first Olympic medal.

Three big things about Team USA

1. Women's soccer escapes Japan in extra time

The USWNT needed extra time to get past a tough playing Japan squad Saturday morning, maintaining a 0-0 deadlock past 90 minutes. But, in minute 105+1, young superstar Trinity Rodman guided an incredible shot from the far right side of the box into the top left corner of the goal to give Team USA a desperately needed 1-0 lead. The American women held on for the win and advance to Tuesday's semifinal against Germany.

2. Biles, Carey secure vault double, Nedoroscik wins bronze in pommel horse

Simone Biles and Jade Carey secured a podium double for Team USA Saturday morning with Biles taking gold and Carey the bronze in the women's vault apparatus. The gold marked Biles' 10th Olympic medal and seventh gold all-time. Stephen Nedoroscik earned bronze in the men's pommel horse apparatus, the only male gymnast to individually medal in Paris.

3. Ledecky completes historic four-peat in 800 freestyle

Katie Ledecky won gold in the women's 800 freestyle Saturday, becoming the first American woman to win the event in four consecutive Olympic Games . The win marks Ledecky's fourth medal in Paris, her second gold and the record 14th of her storied career. The 27-year-old already became the most decorated female American swimmer Thursday when she won gold in the women's 1500 freestyle.

There was a massive upset Saturday in the 4x400 mixed relay as Team Netherlands was in fourth halfway through final lap but its last runner, Femke Bol, surged past everyone in the final 100m to win gold and help set the European record. The Dutch victory came as a huge shock to the American team, which broke the world record in its qualifying heat Friday.
