In April 2021, Richardson qualified for the Tokyo Olympics after coming tops at the US trials. However, her victory and qualification were overturned after she tested positive for cannabis use. Subsequently, she accepted a period of ineligibility that lasted for a month, beginning on June 28, 2021, and ending on July 27, 2021.
