Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has revealed what he wants to achieve this season under Arne Slot having scored a goal against Manchester United thanks to good work down the right flank from Mohamed Salah .

"I feel more like a senior lad in the team so I wanted to come here and impress," Jones said live on LFCTV post-match. "It was a younger group so I wanted to go out there and lead.

"The center-mids are going to get the ball and it is down to us to create things. If I can get a goal, great, and if I can get an assist, great. I want to be a lad who gets goals and assists to help the team."

"I try and improve all the time but I feel in a good place," he responded when he was asked about how he felt the summer had gone so far. "It's super important that we can come away and train every day. It's been hard and it's been hot. Everyone is fit and then we've got the lads who are coming back. Happy days."

On his scoring record at senior level, Jones said: "It's a part of my game that I feel I can improve. I can arrive in the box and score more goals and [my goal vs Manchester United ] was perfect timing. I'm playing deep but I can go and play high as well.

"Plenty of times, I've told Mo [ Salah ] that I've been the best one on the pitch but he says 'But I scored the goals!'. It's one of them now where we've got to try and improve and that's a big part of it — I have to score and assist goals and be involved as much as I can.

"The game now has changed and if the manager sees you as a person who can affect the game then you keep the shirt. That's what I'm going to try and do."

Liverpool.com says: Jones definitely has the quality to go up another gear this season and his youth days show that he should be comfortable in the final third. Last summer, he said he wanted to get into double figures for both goals and assists in all competitions. That was a steep target but it isn't impossible if he stays fit and is consistent.
