A new documentary reveals that one of Elizabeth Taylor's loveless marriages led her to attempt suicide .

"Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes," a Max documentary, delves into the depths of the Hollywood icon's personal life through 40 hours of intimate conversations with the late journalist Richard Meryman recorded in 1964 and 1965.

In a particularly chilling revelation, the Oscar-winning actress opened up about her tumultuous marriage to Eddie Fisher, whom she was married to from 1959 to 1964.

Following the tragic death of her third husband, Mike Todd, in a plane crash in 1958, Taylor found comfort in Fisher, who had co-starred with her in "Butterfield 8" and was a close friend of Todd's.

Despite feeling vulnerable after her loss, Taylor hastily married Fisher in a whirlwind and widely publicized affair, as he was still married to Debbie Reynolds at the time. Their marriage took place just three hours after Fisher's divorce from Reynolds was finalized.

Yet, Taylor confessed in the documentary that Fisher never lived up to the love she held for Todd.

"I never loved Eddie. I liked him. I felt sorry for him," Taylor revealed in the recordings.

She went on to describe their union as "One big friggin' awful mistake," expressing how "lonely" she felt throughout their five-year relationship.

Taylor's despair reached a breaking point when she chose to end her life by overdosing on sleeping pills, an act she performed "deliberately, calmly and in front of Eddie."

"I'd rather be dead than face divorce. I was fed up with living," she confessed.

The star of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf later admitted that she regretted the attempt due to the psychological impact it had on her children.

Taylor had two sons, Michael Howard and Christopher Edward, with her second husband Michael Wilding, a daughter Liza Frances with Todd, and an adopted daughter Maria McKeown with renowned actor Richard Burton.

In addition to her acclaimed acting career, Taylor was also famous for her tumultuous personal life, including her eight marriages to seven different men. She passed away from heart failure in 2011.

Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes will be broadcasted on Max on August 8.
