The track and field world got a shock on Saturday afternoon when heading into the semifinal of the women's 100-meter dash, three-time Olympic gold medalist Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce was not at the starting line.

The Jamaican star was announced as a late scratch just before the race began, leaving fans wanting for the showdown that she was set to have against Team USA star Sha'Carri Richardson, who was in the same heat of the semifinal.

Richardson went on to place second in the heat and then went on to win the silver medal behind St. Lucia's Julien Alfred, who ran a blazing 10.72 to win her country's first-ever gold medal.

After all of the celebrations died down, the reasoning for Fraser-Pryce's absence from the semifinal finally came to light — an injury in warmups.

According to ESPN, Fraser-Pryce sustained an injury in her final warmups before the race began, leading her to pull out.

"Mrs. Fraser-Pryce was allowed to enter the warmup track but from another gate from which she was directed to enter from," Kelly said, via ESPN . "There is no truth that she was not allowed to enter the stadium. Unfortunately, she was not able to compete due to an injury sustained during her final warmup."

After the fact, Fraser-Pryce took to social media to comment on the situation.

"It is difficult for me to find the words to describe the depth of my disappointment. I know that my supporters share and shoulder this disappointment with me. I am truly Blessed to have had the steadfast support of my fans since my Olympic debut in 2008. The support of my fans, my country, and the larger community has rooted me in immense gratitude that has sustained me throughout my career," she wrote.

"With every step and win, you all have been there for me. My Faith has always affirmed my trust in my journey.

In what has been announced as her final Olympic games, Fraser-Pryce saw a bitter end to one of her best events. There is a chance that she can still run in the 4x100 relay later this week, but time will tell with the injury.
