The two men on a scooter apparently snatched a luxury watch from the driver before trying to flee, Le Parisien reports.

Then the motorist, who had a passenger in his car, set off on a chase in the Joliette district of Marseille..

After catching up to them and deliberately hitting them he took back the watch and fled, local media reports.

Shocked bystanders watched on as the crash unfolded at around midnight on Saturday.

The driver and his passenger were arrested by police within hours.

Local prosecutors have launched an investigation.

Marseilles, in the south, has come under scrutiny for its crime levels in the past, French media reports.

Just days ago Brazilian football legend Zico fell victim to a robbery in Paris after thieves snatched his briefcase carrying £420,000 worth of valuable items.

The ex-Flamengo star left his hotel in a taxi carrying with him a Rolex watch, a diamond necklace and bank notes inside the precious case.

It is understood one person approached the taxi driver to distract him, while a second snatched the briefcase from the back of the vehicle.

French officials launched a probe to locate Thursday night’s criminals, Le Parisien reports.

France’s Brigade for the Repression of Banditry is said to be leading the investigation.

Zico is currently in Paris as a member of Brazil’s Olympic delegation.
