A young boy has died after a bouncy castle was blown into the air by high winds.

The five-year-old was at the Regency Furniture baseball stadium in Waldorf, Maryland , in the United States when it happened, Sky News reported.

Emergency services were called on Friday after the inflatable was lifted around “15 to 20 feet up in the air".

Two children were flown to the Children's National Hospital in Washington DC by Maryland State Police and the 5-year-old from La Plata was pronounced dead later that evening.

The second child was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told NBC News the bouncy castle had been secured by stakes hammeredinto the ground.

A spokesman for Charles County, where the incident happened, said emergency services staff at the stadium for the game were joined by volunteers to look after the injured.

Local government commissioner president Reuben Collins added: "We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time.

"We thank our EMS team and the Maryland State Police for their swift actions to ensure the children received immediate care."
