What Arne Slot has told Fabio Carvalho about his Liverpool future as transfer bid rejected

Fabio Carvalho is certainly attracting plenty of attention this summer, and not just at Liverpool .

Having returned from his spell out on loan with Hull City in the Championship, the 21-year-old has been catching the eye in pre-season. Having scored in the 2-1 win over Arsenal in midweek , Carvalho was on target again as Liverpool eased to a 3-0 win over Manchester United .

Just hours after his latest impressive showing though, there are fresh questions over his future. According to The Athletic , Liverpool has rejected an offer worth up to $19.2m (£15m/€17.6m) from Southampton .

Although there is no desire to let Carvalho go back out on loan, a permanent exit has seemingly not been ruled out, although it would take a considerably higher fee than the one presented by Southampton.

Arne Slot is said to have been left impressed by Carvalho’s performances in pre-season, and is looking to use him during the 2024/25 campaign. Talks over his future are expected to take place once Liverpool returns to the UK, although the new head coach has already spoken to the forward this summer.

“We spoke about it and the manager told me to try and settle on the wing but obviously I know where I play best and I feel that is as a No. 10,” Carvalho told the Liverpool Echo last month.

“We’ve had a few conversations which I’m not going to go into detail about, but he wants me to get my head down and work hard and see where that goes. I’m just going to do what he wants me to do and just work as hard as I can for him.

“He’s giving me good instructions and motivating me a lot in training and giving me that confidence. I want to make an impact, that’s what it is all about. Not just for me but for everyone involved.

“There’s good chances for the young players as well, for myself as well. It’s a good chance for everyone to put their foot down and stamp their mark.”

Carvalho would also add: "He wants me to obviously do the defensive stuff first. He knows what qualities I have. It’s good to have someone that’s always onto me, making sure I’m on it, and that’s what I’ve got from the gaffer."

Liverpool.com says: Carvalho has been pretty outspoken over the past year or so about his chances at Liverpool, and he hasn’t been too shy about his relationship with Jurgen Klopp . It’s good to see him then performing well in pre-season and sounding as though he’s getting on with Slot.

It will be interesting to see what happens from here though. You’d expect him to drop down the pecking order once the remaining members of the squad report back for training, so will the opportunities he would receive be enough to convince him to stay?
