Arne Slot just proved Jurgen Klopp right as Liverpool shows Man Utd truth in pre-season win

Arne Slot has proved former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp's previous comments about Manchester United had some truth in them .

The Reds ran out 3-0 winners against the current United side at the Williams–Brice Stadium in South Carolina , with goals from Fabio Carvalho , Curtis Jones and Kostas Tsimikas seeing Slot's side past Dutch compatriot Erik ten Hag. While it was only a pre-season win, it was an impressive one that looks to bode well for the Reds' upcoming Premier League campaign.

The previous two times Liverpool faced off against United under Klopp saw the Reds only come away with a single point from Old Trafford. They lost a 4-3 extra-time heartbreaker to Ten Hag's side in the FA Cup quarter-finals back in March, with Amad Diallo scoring in the 121st minute to send United through to a Wembley semi-final.

Then just over two weeks later, United dealt Liverpool's Premier League title hopes a hammer blow by drawing 2-2 with the Reds. With Manchester City and Arsenal seemingly unable to lose down the stretch in the Premier League, the 2-2 draw resulted in the Reds surrendering their title advantage over their two rivals.

And to make things even worse, the draw saw Liverpool punished once again for not being able to take their chances. They had 28 shots against United in the Premier League clash, and should have comfortably won. So the 3-0 pre-season win, even if it was just a friendly, was a welcome result.

Speaking back in April following the draw against United, Klopp claimed he was stunned Liverpool had not won both matches. He told TNT Sport : "We played two games [at Old Trafford] and got one point and got knocked out of the [FA] Cup.

“But in all my time I don’t think we have ever dominated the way we did [today]. Arsenal is a good football team and if [United] play like today, Arsenal will win that game, I'm 100% sure. I'm really sorry to say that but this is a matter of fact. We should've won both games and didn't. That's our fault."

Liverpool.com says: When Klopp said Liverpool dominated Manchester United last term, the former Reds boss was not lying. It was a travesty Liverpool did not win those games against United at Old Trafford. Had they won both, then things at the end of the season could have been very different. Ultimately though, Liverpool did not take their chances in both games and were punished.

The Reds were impressive against Manchester United out in the US and their 3-0 win is a positive sign. However, the game that really matters is on September 1, when the two will square off again at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
